Topsoil Coverage Calculator - How Much Topsoil Do I Need?

After much trial and error, I finally devised a simple formula to estimate my needs accurately for any garden or landscaping project as a homeowner. Here's my foolproof step-by-step process:

Step 1: Measure the Garden Area

Use a measuring tape to get the length and width of the entire garden space in feet that needs fresh topsoil. Multiply to get the total square footage i.e. AREA.

Step 2: Determine Depth

Decide how deep you want the topsoil layer to be based on what you're planting. Vegetables and flowers need at least 12 inches depth/thickness.

Step 3: Input Data

Add the garden's square footage AREA and desired topsoil thickness(inches) into the coverage calculator above. It will tell you the cubic yards required and also convert the cubic yards to other units of volume.

Step 4: Allow Extra

I recommend adding an extra 20% as a buffer for uneven ground and wastage when spreading topsoil in the garden.

Step 5: Order Topsoil

Armed with the total cubic yards needed, you can now confidently order high-quality topsoil without worrying about shortages or excess amounts.

Step 6: Spread Topsoil

Use a rake, shovel or loader to spread the topsoil evenly across the measured garden area at the desired depth.

Step 7: Level Surface

Use a plank or lawn roller to create an even, lightly compacted grade for planting or laying sod.
